The Best Present for Dad!

With Father’s Day approaching this coming Sunday how are you choosing to show your dad, grandfather, and other special men in your lives your love and appreciation?

We’ve got an idea that we know he’ll love, a YourArchive Father’s Day gallery slideshow!

Why?

Because it is quick and easy to create and allows you to share those precious moments and memories with him and anyone else you might like to see them!

Let us explain how…

Please note, if you have already created a YourArchive account, uploaded your photos, videos and documents, tagged your images, and using the automated facial recogntion, please follow from instruction number 8!

1.      Register for YourArchive.

Register to YourArchive. It’s completely free to join, and our free subscription includes 1Gb of secure cloud storage (that’s 500-600 photos!) to get you started.

2. Login and create your archive

Create a new archive on YourArchive, this could be named ‘family memories’ or ‘The Jones Family Archive’ for example. For information to on how to create an archive please see this video.

3. Upload your photos, videos, and documents to the newly created archive

This may involve digitising any physical photos by scanning them (apps are available to do this from your phone or tablet if you don’t have a scanner), then upload the photos, videos, and documents that are stored on your computer to your newly created archive on YourArchive.

(Top tip: There’s no need to manually create the folders in the system then upload the content folder by folder. Simply drag and drop the parent folder into the upload screen and YourArchive will replicate the whole structure at the same time the content is uploaded. Easy and quick!)

4.   Invite family members, for example, siblings, to the archive to upload their own photos, videos or documents. (Optional)

YourArchive allows you to invite an unlimited number of people to contribute to your archive. Each invited member can upload their own photos, videos, or documents. Your uncle based in Australia, for example, might be in possession of the physical photos of your dad’s childhood – by inviting your family members it means that each member can upload the images that they have straight into the archive. No need to worry about sending them via post, via email (contending with size limits), or file transfer services.

5. Switch on facial recognition

From within your archive (top menu, above your content), select ‘select all’ and then select ‘Request Facial Recognition’. (please note: you have the option to also only select particular folders or images).

6. Identify faces

The automated facial recognition will run through the selected content, once this has completed select ‘People’ from the top menu. Here you will be able to see all the different faces that have been identified within your archive. You will now see a list, with the first name specified as ‘unknown person’ with a number alongside on the right hand side of the page. This number relates to the number of images found that include that particular face. Press ‘Show content’ to view the images. To identify who that face belongs too, select the three dots on the right hand side and four different options will appear:

  • Edit Details
Here you can add the details of people that appear in your photographs. Simply add the required details and select update. Alternatively, if these images appear to be of someone that is already identified within your archive, select ‘Merge into Existing Person’. This may happen when a side profile looks different when compared to that person face on.

  • Manage Faces

Use this if the system confuses two people as the same person (one blurry black and white baby can look much like another). Select ‘Manage Faces’. A list will appear on the left hand side with options on the right hand side of; ‘Remove Face’ (when you do not want this face included under this person), ‘Do not use for facial recognition’ (particularly useful when someone appears in the background of an image or the quality isn’t brilliant), ‘Assign to new person’ (when identifying someone new) or ‘Assign to other person’ to assign the people tag to someone already identified.

  • Delete

This may be used when only a very small part of the face may be seen, in a photograph that you feel you do not need to identify who is in it, or in a picture where there are multiple people in the background of an image.

  • This is me

This is at quick and easy way of identifying yourself in any images. Simply select ‘this is me’ and then press ‘confirm’ on the pop up that appears.

(Top tip: Once facial recognition is switched on, and faces have been identified, every time you add new photos to your archive, people tags will automatically be assigned!)

7. Tag your photos

In addition to people tags, photos, videos and documents can also be tagged with words. Tags could include locations, objects, or even feelings. All invited members can tag content within the archive, meaning that if you’re not sure where a photo was taken – other members of your family can ‘fill in the gaps’! For information on how to tag your content, please view our video.

8. Create galleries from your archive content

Now your photos, videos and documents have been tagged it is time to create your Father’s Day gallery!

  • Select ‘galleries’ from the top menu

  • Select ‘add gallery’ from the left hand menu

  • Name your gallery, for example, “Fun times with Dad”

  • Select ‘next’

  • Add a banner image by either uploading an image, or selecting an image. (The image can be moved around by selecting the arrows beside ‘Resposition banner image’).

  • Now choose or upload a small image (this will replace the YourArchive logo in the centre)

  • Select ‘Add’

  • Now it’s time to add the search criteria. Here you can add as many or as few filters as you like depending on what you are trying to achieve. We will show you how to add just the photos of your dad, but remember you could also add a filter to include all photos of you and your dad, or all photos of your dad in particular locations, or between particular dates. The opportunities are endless depending on how well your content has been tagged and catalogued.

  • Under ‘Filter type’ select ‘People tag’

  • Under ‘People tags’ start typing your Dad’s name and select it when it appears (if you are wanting to add more people, here is where you can do it)

  • Select ‘Add Filter’ on right hand side

  • Once you have added all the filters you are wanting to, select ‘Filter Content’ at the top right hand side.

  • You will now see all the photos/documents/videos that match your search criteria. Here you have the option to select all/some of the content, Deselect all, or to return to the filters to perhaps change the search criteria if required. (Select images by clicking on them).

  • Once you’ve selected your content, select ‘Add to gallery’.

  • Now you can change the order of the gallery if required. Once happy with the order, select ‘Save Order and View Gallery’

9. Share your galleries with your Dad (or anyone else you want to)!

Galleries can be enjoyed privately, shared with a defined set of users, or shared publicly via a unique URL. Galleries can also be customised with colours, logos and more! View our video about publishing galleries to find out more.

To view as a slideshow you will need to publish the gallery, view the gallery and then select ‘slideshow’ under the small central image. Here you will have the option to select the seconds between images, as well as copy the gallery to a new URL to share with Dad.

We hope he enjoys it!

Please contact support if you have any questions, and feel free to share any galleries you create with us! We’d love to see them!

And remember once your content is uploaded to YourArchive, and tagged, creating galleries only takes a matter of minutes to then share and enjoy with friends and family!
